A YES FOR THE CHALLENGE WITH NFW

A YES FOR THE CHALLENGE WITH NFW

The field Noardlike Fryske Wâlden holds the designation National Landscape. This is due to the special landscape and heritage qualities. The ancient bocage with alder canals and hedgerows remained virtually intact. That makes it unique in Europe. NFW asked us to help them to explore new business and engagement models to preserve this unique landscape.

POD PEANUT STAGE by KLIKKESBAUS AND THE SOCIAL INNOVATION FOUNDATION

POD PEANUT STAGE, IABR, ROTTERDAM, JULY 3th 2014, 7:30 - 9:30 PM, ORGANIZED BY KLIKKESBAUS AND THE SOCIAL INNOVATION FOUNDATION

During the IABR–2014–URBAN BY NATURE, at the first pod peanut stage, the connection between nature and architecture will be investigated and unravelled on the basis of two narratives: ‘Architecture Follows Nature’ and ‘Nature Meets Architecture’.

Ilaria Mazzoleni (IMStudios, Milan/Los Angeles) addresses the first theme. In her book, recently published, Architecture Follows Nature: Biomimetic Principles for Innovative Design (CRC Press), innovative solutions are found for building envelopes by the imitation of tactics from the animal kingdom (biomimesis).

Huib van Zeijl en Daniëlle Segers (Équipe architects, Amsterdam) will address the theme ‘Nature Meets Architecture’. Their extension for the Helvoirt Groenprojecten ‘Proyecto Roble’ has been, amongst others, winner of the BNA Building of the Year Award (2013) as well as the ARC12 Price of Architecture (2012). A very special and sustainable project, embedded in the environmental context and built in an innovative collaboration. ‘Green’ (ecological) energy is generated locally, and during the entire project, and lots of thinking has gone into how to dismantable buildings and accountably use materials. Artifical light is practically redundant and the bio-rhythm of people is the central issue.

Manou Huijbregts (HP architecten, Rotterdam) will be the moderator of this evening.

INSPIRING MEETING OF 'DE GEMENE DELERS'

INSPIRING MEETING OF 'DE GEMENE DELERS'

The role of art and design in social issues

This time De Gemene Delers (The Common Denominators) meeting was about the role of art and design in social issues: exploring wicked problems from different perspectives. Impressive stories, rethinking, and good food.

"A wicked problem is a form of social or cultural problem that is difficult to solve because of incomplete, contradictory, and changing requirements. These problems are typically offloaded to policy makers, or are written off as being too cumbersome to bother with. Yet these are the problems that plague our world and our cities - poverty, sustainability, equality and health and wellness are issues that touch each and every one of us”. IMAGES PROPELLING A CO-CREATION DIALOGUE

IMAGES PROPELLING A CO-CREATION DIALOGUE

Images and dialogue

Developing strategy in co-creation with your stakeholders is the best way to prepare for the future and it's fun too. Because language is not always evident it's helpful to use images: photography as a means of deepening the dialogue .
For example: a medium-sized housing association understands that the company and its industrial context are in transition. Resources are scarce, there's limited government, issues get increasingly complex. The association calls for a dialogue with its stakeholders to reassess its vision based on deeply held beliefs. She realizes the need for other disciplines in making meaningful steps ahead.
In preparation for a meeting with all stakeholders, five organizational key players are interviewed on two core values: 'reciprocity' and 'doing more than necessary'. The outcomes of each interview were translated into two pictures, each of them depicting a point where the talks were exciting. Excitement mainly arousing from dilemmas or painful areas of decision making. Together, the ten photographs that emerged, visualized the starting point of an inspiring dialogue on future strategy with all stakeholders. Client: Plateau. Contact: Mariëlle Gebben.

A SMART MOBILITY CHALLENGE

A SMART MOBILITY CHALLENGE

SPECIAL PROGRAM WS&RS

TSIF starts with conducting an inventory of the WS&RS (Work Smart & Travel Smart) program: challenges in a mobility program at a behavioural level.

During the first years of the program there was a strong emphasis on 5 % fewer cars in rush hours and improving the accessibility of Leeuwarden. To realize this people were encouraged to use (electric) bicycles,  public transport options, digital technology. Also smart work possibilities were facilitated.

WS&RS represents the mobility component in Leeuwarden. In May 2010, government and industry concluded on an ambitious mobility agreement. The set goal was challenging a 5% diminishing of cars during rush hours, by working and travelling smarter. Less travelling or choosing different times aim at reducing the number of kilometres and an improved accessibility of the city of Leeuwarden .

Within the national program 'Improved Utilization' (Beter Benutten), regions and industries work together to improve accessibility. The objective is to reduce congestion at the busiest points in 2014 with 20 percent within a range of about 300 practical, measurable actions. Besides 2014 being administered as the year of measurable effects, it also brought forward the decision to continue the program. Together, the ministry and regions decided to invest an additional 600 million Euro until the end of 2017. This way allowing the parties involved to reach for an extra 10 percent improvement. 'WERKEN AAN WEST': A SUCCESSFUL CO-CREATION CASE IN NEIGHBOURHOOD DEVELOPMENT

On Tuesday, February 4th, the Workbook West was presented at a special meeting headed by Arno van der Heyden. This booklet being one of the results of multiple 'city-area vision' evenings with citizens of the city of Groningen. Residents, entrepreneurs, civil-servants, housing corporations, welfare organizations, police officers and other interested parties worked together, not only on designing policy for future development, but also on realizing concrete changes and improvements in their living area. In co-creation these parties identified eight themes as being essential in future area development. Within the following stages of this proces ideas and preferences were listed, plans were made and projects started. The results of this co-creation program are compiled in a work booklet: not a static document, but a permanently developing co-creative magazine. All new ideas and initiatives that deserve to be prolonged can be written down, sketched or worked out in this document .

TSIF is a consulting and organizing partner in this co-creative neighbourhood approach. Client: Municipality of Groningen. Contact: Peter Everts.

social innovation levels and dynamics

social innovation levels and dynamics

Do we use a narrow or wide (European) definition of social innovation in the Netherlands? Involves innovation in the context of the work organization or new solutions and concepts for complex and social challenges? This question has been commitment of many discussions. Now there seems to be moving at the front with an opinion on social innovation in the making, it seems as though the Advisory Council for Science and Technology Policy (AWT) is proposed to also follow the European interpretation of the concept in the Netherlands. TSIF was a member of the AWT expert meeting.
